Gauri has also pledged Rs 17 lakh that she has received through the TV show Kaun Banega Crorepati for her initiative. Gauri has approached Milaap a crowdfunding initiative to raise funds for her cause. The target is to collect Rs 62 lakh towards the project. The target amount is decided by campaign organisers based on the specific need which is to build a shelter home in the case of Gauri. Milaap has raised nearly Rs 35 lakh so far with nearly 600 people having supported the fundraiser by making a contribution. The fundraiser page has also been shared about 3 000 times on social media. Any amount can be pledged from as little as a rupee with Paytm the spokesperson said. We feel privileged to play a role in taking her story to a larger audience after all such stories deserve to be told the spokesperson said. Gauri s transformation from Ganesh Suresh Sawant from Pune has been well-chronicled in the media. Her dream is to build a home in the light of a very disturbing incident that she witnessed. In Kamathipura I came across a little child playing with her mother s dupatta inside one of the shacks. I stepped closer to adore the little one and was shocked to see a man zipping up his pants right there. I realised that the mother was actually working with the little one in the room since there was no other place where she could leave her baby. It really disturbed me to think that children are having to grow up watching all this and decided to do something to change the lives of these kids she said. This incident spurred Gauri to think of creating a safe home for girl children. She rued that girls were unsafe in their homes where their mothers were sex workers. Girls of sex workers are more vulnerable said Gauri adding that I want to create a safe home for these daughters where basic education and health will be provided besides care love and safety that every child deserves. To be built on a plot of land measuring around 2 500 sq feet which Gauri received as a gift the home has been aptly named Naani ka Ghar or Aaji cha Ghar (Grandma s home) the home will be built at the at the outskirts of Mumbai in Kamare village in Palghar district. The plan is to provide accommodation for about 60 to 70 children. So far Gauri has five children that she is taking care of in a daycare facility. The children will be given basic education in the home itself so as to avoid them being viewed as sex workers children while being enrolled in a school.

MUMBAI: In a departure from the past the Maharashtra government s tribal development department has managed to attract investors both foreign and domestic companies to put money in projects that aim to transform and financially secure tribal communities in the state. The idea is to help garment manufacturers who want to set up units in tribal areas in exporting tribal arts and promoting homestay in tribal houses basically everything that makes the tribal community financially self-sufficient. Fashion designer Anita Dongre for instance has signed an MoU with the state to offer a tailoring contract to 60 women of a self-help group in Mokhada in Palghar district at market rates. Another reputed brand has decided to set up a unit in Pune which will cater to the exports market. State government officials said that they envisage training 1 000 tribal women to make fashion garments. Government officials said that around 50 MoUs and LoUs have been signed with companies and they believe the investment in the sector could go up to Rs 10 crore a year. Though the amount is small the state believes that investments in the tribal sector in the next five years could jump to Rs 100-150 crore. Officials said that this is a big step because in the past the money that came into tribal areas was only for the corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects but this is the first time that so much money is coming for skilling them and providing them employment opportunities. The Maharashtra government is also talking to several companies to not just promote tribal products and handicrafts but also showcase the tribal way of life. For instance talks are on with at least two hospitality firms for eco-tourism where tourists would come and stay in tribal homes under a homestay arrangement which would give visitors a feel of the tribal life. Everyone benefits from this the tribals would get a source of income and the hospitality firm would train the tribals to be tourist-friendly. They could even take the tourists on nature trails said Manisha Verma secretary of the tribal development department. Not just tourism the state has started an initiative to preserve and brand indigenous varieties of rice. Officials claimed that they have identified 40 different varieties of rice that benefit patients suffering from diabetes to heart ailments. Black rice grown by particular regions of the state by tribals is known to be anti-oxidant which is good for heart patients; similarly brown rice has a lower glycemic index which means it can be consumed by diabetics said Ayush Prasad an assistant district collector from Pune and project officer of the Integrated Tribal Development Project. In the recent Magnetic Maharashtra Investor summit the tribal department attracted interest from exporters and other firms which wanted to export authentic Gond art and Warli paintings abroad. The state has already decided to create a logo for such products under the banner of Maha Tribe. There s also a plan to create a unit for bottling and branding wild honey collected by the tribals. We are keen to build partnerships with interested companies agencies and work in collaboration with other government departments to facilitate time-bound progress to convert them into concrete MoUs for rollout said Verma.
